The founder of MAYFIVE Hair broke down why a multi-faceted dietary approach is critical for healthy hair
No food can single-handedly support the regeneration of hair. Foods with certain nutritional profiles, however, are more conducive to healthy growth.
Katie Allan, hair stylist and Founder of MAYFIVE Hair told GB News that “to combat hair thinning, a multi-faceted dietary approach is critical”.
She said antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and biotin are all vital for hair growth because each plays a unique role in maintaining the structure of shafts.
However, according to the expert, staying adequately hydrated is just as important for supporting the hair’s infrastructure.
Vitamins are the building blocks of healthy hair growth
GETTY“Antioxidants play a vital role in protecting hair follicles against environmental stressors; thus, a diet rich in fruits like berries and vegetables ensures robust follicle health,” Allan explained.
“Omega-3 fatty acids, found in flaxseeds, and fatty fish, enhance hair shaft and scalp health, promoting lustre and elasticity.
“Additionally, incorporating biotin-rich foods such as eggs and avocados can support keratin infrastructure, which is vital for hair strength.
“Importantly, maintaining adequate hydration is crucial and it impacts the life cycle of hair cells, potentially delaying the onset of thinning.”
Like many other experts, Katie urges people to stop rubbing their towels aggressively on their hair.
“Instead, gently blot and use a microfibre town which is kinder to hair,” she recommends.
“Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair, starting from the ends to minimise breakage."
She added: “Invest in leave-in conditioners or hair serum to lock in moisture and protect your hair from heat styling tools.”
Allan says washing hair less frequently can improve shine and thickness by preserving natural oils and minimising damage caused by heat styling products and excessive washing.

These common habits cause stress to the hair shaft and lead to breakages and split ends.
“However, it is essential to find a balance that suits your individual hair type and needs,” said the stylist.
“Be mindful of buildup, oiliness and scalp health when deciding how often to wash your locks.”
It's important to remember improvements take time, so patience and consistency with your efforts are key.
