Miriam Margolyes has upset Harry Potter fans across the world after she claimed they should no longer be watching the series as they’re "too old" for it.

Margolyes starred as Professor Sprout in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Pt 2.

Harry Potter is based on JK Rowling’s series of books and has been a sensation across the globe since 2001 – even being the theme of some peoples weddings.

Margolyes recently admitted that whilst her time in the films were “wonderful” and she was “very grateful” to the franchise, she was “over it.”

In a recent interview with New Zealand TV network 1News, Margolyes noted: “I worry about the Harry Potter fans.

“They should be over that by now. It was 25 years ago and it’s for children. I think it’s for children. But they get stuck in it.

“I do cameos and people say ‘Oh we are having a Harry Potter-themed wedding’ and I think ‘gosh, what’s their first night of fun going to be?’.

“I can’t even thing about it. Harry Potter is wonderful. I’m very grateful to it, it’s over.”

After the interview was release, some fans of the films were left furious about her remarks and took their dislike to social media.

One social media user commented: “Where would you find the Harry Potter books in a bookshop? ... In the children's section. It's for kids. Grow up. Miriam Margolyes debate over.”

“You would think someone who worked on Harry Potter for 10 years would understand the magic the series holds for people of all ages but I guess not. She was clearly just there for a paycheck I guess,” another added.

A third quipped: “What a shame. She fails to understand the longevity of fandoms, but for many, Harry Potter surpass age and time.

“The series has had a significant impact on countless individuals, shaping their love for reading and igniting imagination.”

“She’s an actor that had a pretty small role in the movie, not sure why she’d be asked for her opinion. If the interest isn’t stunting the people’s ability to function in the real world I’d say just let them enjoy things,” one fumed.

Not all were offended by the comments that were made, as one user defended: “Miriam Margolyes is right btw. The harry potter fans who are upset about that are only proving her right.”

“Haha finally some common sense. I don’t think anyone should get stuck in a game/movie/show, it’s unhealthy and it’s just an escape mechanism.

“If you need something like that to escape, then that’s just a sign you need to start changing your life,” another spouted.

Staying neutral, one commented: “I honestly think this is a matter of her generation. They’re very much a ‘grow up and grow out of the things you loved as a kid’ generation.

“I wouldn’t take this to heart, love what you love and do what you want.” (sic)
