An Armed Forces Day parade has been cancelled despite the 80th anniversary of VE Day, which was celebrated at the beginning of May.

Clackmannanshire Council claimed it "can't justify the event" that was due to take place on Friday, June 6, and commemorates service personnel.

The Scottish council described the decision as "disappointing" but claimed the low numbers of participants couldn't justify road closures.

Donald Balsille, SNP Councillor for Clackmannanshire North, argued lessons can be learned from this for future events.

He said: “It’s disappointing, particularly in the 80th anniversary year of VE Day, but it was purely down to logistics. We’ve relied quite a lot on the army cadets, and they’re preparing for camp.

“I'm sure we can learn lessons from this for future events.”

The unanimous decision from the council was taken for a variety of logistical, financial, and operational reasons, according to the councillor.

He added: "It is unfortunate and disappointing, but the most sensible outcome of our most recent event planning meeting."

Many locals have been left fuming with the news first reported by local media, with 44 Facebook users reacting with an angry face and five with a sad face.

Balsillie said that most local authorities in the Forth Valley area are struggling to organise a parade.

He explained: “We’re looking into the idea of combining them and doing the events rotationally.

“It’s certainly true that the support for meeting the costs of these days is waning a bit, the army has pressures all around the world, so their resources are being deployed elsewhere."

Balsillie continued: “I think people have maybe forgotten the purpose of them, which is the community giving back to the armed forces.

"For most local authorities it’s turned into a parade that soldiers provide for the community.”

According to the local council's website, Armed Forces Day, which is celebrated on June 6, is an "opportunity for Clackmannanshire to recognise the outstanding contribution to this country made by every sailor, soldier and airman, both past and present."

It adds: "Armed Forces Day also allows recognition of the vital support and contribution provided by reservists, cadet forces, veterans and families of servicemen and women."
