Wordle rushed to change the word to something less controversial, but some users reported that it remained the correct answer on their puzzle

Wordle has been forced to change Monday's answer in response to the US Supreme Court's decision to overturn legalised abortion in the US.

The New York Times removed the word "foetus" due to the word's associations with the controversial ruling.

The newspaper rushed to change the word to something less controversial, but some users reported that it remained the correct answer on their puzzle.

Last week, a leaked draft opinion from the US Supreme Court suggested that the constitutional right to an abortion could be overturned, allowing states to choose their own rules.

The issue has emerged at the forefront of US politics as protests were seen across the country in the wake of the leak.

On Monday, the New York Times insisted that the word "fetus" was loaded into the game last year, and its appearance on the game was "entirely unintentional and a coincidence".

Wordle was purchased by the New York Times in January, just three months after its launched, after it gained masses of popularity.

Welsh software engineer Josh Wardle designed the game to entertain his puzzle enthusiast girlfriend during the pandemic.

Players are tasked with guessing a five-letter word with only six attempts, and only one word is released each day.

The number of people playing the game has surged to millions worldwide in recent months.

A statement released by the New York Times admits they are still dealing with "new challenges" that come with owning the game.

“Today, for example, some users may see an outdated answer that seems closely connected to a major recent news event. This is entirely unintentional and a coincidence - today’s original answer was loaded into Wordle last year,” it said.

“At New York Times Games, we take our role seriously as a place to entertain and escape, and we want Wordle to remain distinct from the news.

“But because of the current Wordle technology, it can be difficult to change words that have already been loaded into the game.

“When we discovered last week that this particular word would be featured today, we switched it for as many solvers as possible.”
