NATO needs to step things up and help end the Russian and Ukrainian war as soon as possible, a senior military expert has warned.
Former British Army Officer Hamish de Bretton-Gordon also said Vladimir Putin’s position was currently on a knife edge.
Speaking to GB News he said: “I think we've been surprised how really poor the Russian military is. And the Russian military has all but been defeated. And I think because of that, NATO now needs to take a more proactive stance here.

“It is very clear that the Russians are running out of missiles, and they are perhaps looking to more unconventional ones. We haven't seen the biological and chemical attacks materialise and I think the killer thing is how, in effect, Putin is using the threat of nuclear weapons to keep NATO out of the direct fight in Ukraine.
“But I think in future, and going forward, I think NATO needs to get much more involved. I think NATO needs to step up its support to get this war over with as quickly as possible. Putin's own position is probably on a knife edge. And if we can enable Ukraine to push the Russians out of Crimea, I don't think the Russian state will allow Putin to carry on much longer, because they will have lost everything.”
The comments came after Lord Richard Dannatt also told GB News that Putin’s position was in peril.

The former Head of the British Army said Putin could be unseated by his own generals, if Ukraine continues to make gains in its successful counter-offensives, according to the former head of the British army.
Speaking exclusively to GB News he said it was vital that Western allies, particularly the United States, continued to stay the course in supplying Ukraine with state-of-the-art weapons systems.
“Ukraine has done fantastically well.” Lord Dannatt said. “It bore the onslaught on its own. But very quickly the West, NATO and particularly the United States has stood up.”
The General said that the UK, and politicians including Boris Johnson deserve significant credit as well. But he also warned that the West cannot afford to weaken its resolve now.
“Yes, it’s important that the European countries remain committed. One or two are looking wobbly.
"It's important that European countries stay behind Ukraine, but really important that Uncle Sam stays behind Ukraine. That’s absolutely critical because the sophisticated weaponry that’s going in is the game changer.”
