The disruption will last for several hours according to police

The M4 has been shut in both directions after a serious crash involving an overturned lorry and multiple other vehicles.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the accident between junction 17 and 18 shortly after 9am this morning.


The road was closed shortly afterwards, with drivers warned it will be hours before the usually busy motorway can re-open.

An air ambulance is in attendance.

Wiltshire police said in a statement: "Emergency services are currently in attendance at a serious collision on the M4.

"The collision happened just inside the Wiltshire border between Junction 17 Chippenham and Junction 18 Bath at approximately 9.10am.

"Multiple vehicles are involved, including an HGV.

"The M4 is closed in both directions at Junction 17 while emergency services are in attendance.

"Due to the nature of the collision and the vehicles involved, this closure is likely to remain in place for some time.

"Drivers should avoid the area if possible.

"Anyone with information should call 101 and quote log number 93 of today."

There are also long delays on other stretched of the M4 that remain open due to Storm Babet.

Heavy rain overnight as led to flooding between junction 16 and junction 17.

A number of weather warnings are in place across the UK because of the conditions, but with the alerts mainly relating to above Birmingham.

In Scotland, some towns have even been evacuated due to flooding.
