The South West of England has been identified as the UK's leading destination for over 50s looking to downsize, new research has revealed.
Analysis by property specialists Regency Living found that 43 per cent of the region's population is aged 50 or above.
Establishing itself as a "haven" for older Britons, this significantly exceeds the national average across England and Wales, where over 50s represent 38.2 per cent of the population.
The research examined Office for National Statistics population data to determine where older generations constitute the largest proportion of residents.
And it provides guidance for Britons who are unsure of where to settle during their senior years.
The findings position the South West region as the premier choice for mature movers prioritising lifestyle improvements, community connections, and convenience when relocating to smaller properties.
At a more local level, North Norfolk has emerged as the standout destination among older residents.
The area boasts the highest concentration of over 50s anywhere in England and Wales, with 57.4 per cent of its population falling into this age bracket.

East Lindsey and Rother follow closely behind North Norfolk, both recording a 54.9 per cent over 50s population.
Derbyshire Dales completes the top four destinations, with 54.6 per cent of its population in the over 50s category.
These four areas represent the most concentrated communities of older residents across the country.
Several other locations across England demonstrate similarly high concentrations of over 50s residents, with more than half of their populations falling into this demographic.

The South West of England is officially the top region for over 50s looking to downsize. However, at a local level, more hotspots across the country have emerged.
- North Norfolk (57.4% aged 50+)
- East Lindsey (54.9% aged 50+)
- Rother (54.9% aged 50+)
- Derbyshire Dales (54.6% aged 50+)
- West Devon (54.5% aged 50+)
- Torridge (53.9% aged 50+)
- Dorset (52.6% aged 50+)
- The New Forest (52.3% aged 50+)
- Isle of Wight (52.3% aged 50+)
West Devon currently records 54.5 per cent of residents aged 50 and above, while Torridge follows closely with 53.9 per cent.
Dorset attracts older movers with 52.6 per cent of its population over 50, alongside the New Forest and Isle of Wight, both registering 52 per cent.
The data demonstrates a clear pattern of older movers gravitating towards specific locations that offer the amenities and community atmosphere they desire when downsizing.
These destinations provide more than scenic coastlines and countryside settings, but also community connections, accessible amenities, and active social scenes specifically suited to this age group.
For many individuals, the downsizing process extends beyond simply acquiring smaller accommodation; it represents an opportunity to enhance their lifestyle while living among neighbours who share similar life stages, interests, and values.
Sales and marketing director at Regency Living, Tim Simmons, commented: "There's a real peace of mind that comes with moving to an area where you know you'll feel understood, welcomed, and supported.
"Whether it's joining local walking groups, coffee mornings, or simply enjoying a chat with like-minded neighbours, these communities offer the social richness that makes life after 50 even more rewarding.
"It's for exactly these reasons that we’ve seen a growing preference amongst over 50s when it comes to opting for the park home lifestyle.
Not only can they secure a more affordable home in some of the nation’s most beautiful retirement spots, but they can do so in a ready-made community of like-minded people their own age, which means adapting to their new pace of life is seamless.”
