Princess Charlene has cancelled her participation in Monaco's official visit to Japan for Expo 2025 Osaka, citing developments in the Middle East.

The Princess of Monaco had been scheduled to travel with Prince Albert II and their children, Hereditary Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella.

The Prince's Palace announced that "in light of current events taking place in the Middle East, this has led to the decision that H.S.H. Princess Charlene and the Princely children would not be participating in this trip."

Prince Albert will proceed with the visit alone, departing without his wife and children for the celebrations marking Monaco's National Day on June 28.

Princess Stéphanie will join her brother for the prestigious event, accompanied by her son Louis Ducruet and his wife Marie, as well as her daughters Pauline Ducruet and Camille Gottlieb.

In a statement, Princess Charlene expressed her gratitude: "H.S.H. Princess Charlene wishes to express her sincere thanks to the teams of the Monaco Pavilion, as well as to the partners and hosts who were to welcome her in Japan, for their understanding and ongoing commitment."

The World Expo, which opened to visitors on April 13, 2025, on Yumeshima artificial island, centres on the theme "Designing Future Society for Our Lives."

The royal delegation's activities will commence on June 27 with a charity football match titled "United through Legends" at Panasonic Stadium Suita in Osaka.

The match will feature Les Barbagiuans of Monaco, with Louis Ducruet serving as president, competing against the Japan All-Star Team.

The event, held under Prince Albert II's patronage, will direct all proceeds to Fight Aids Monaco, the charity headed by Princess Stéphanie, alongside several Japanese charitable organisations.

The match represents a significant charitable component of the visit, preceding the formal National Day ceremonies scheduled for the following day at the Expo site.

The official ceremonies on June 28 will begin in the late morning with a formal welcome for the Monegasque delegation at the Expo site.

The programme includes the playing of both nations' anthems, flag-raising ceremonies, and addresses from the Japanese government and Expo 2025 representatives, followed by Prince Albert II's speech.

The Prince's Carabiniers Orchestra will provide musical performances during the ceremony, with an official luncheon scheduled at the Guest House afterwards.

Prince Albert's afternoon itinerary encompasses visits to multiple pavilions, starting with the Japan Pavilion, then Monaco's own pavilion, before touring the Saudi Arabia and France exhibitions.

The Prince's Carabiniers Orchestra will present a concert to conclude the day's events.
