'All trends die; better to go with classic natural,' the expert advised

While makeup is all about personal style and self-expression, some techniques may be more flattering than others, particularly as you age.

Overlining the lips, for example, is a popular method beloved by youthful influencers. However, according to one makeup artist, those over 50 might want to steer clear of it.

Insisting that it looks "crazy", beauty expert Carmindy Bowyer offered an alternative to make sure your lips look their best.

Taking to TikTok, Carmindy (who goes by @carmindy_beauty), said: "As we age, a lot of times the perimeter of our lips - our lips' border - kind of starts fading.

"You want to start with a very nude lip liner if you have the fading issue, and lightly draw it on your lip line."

Her first piece of advice was to avoid drawing over the natural lip line. Those who have pandered to the trend "look like they're trying too hard," Carmindy warned.

Overlining your lips essentially means going slightly beyond the natural lip line to make your lips look fuller, L'Oreal explains.

"But everybody can see that liner; they know you're overlining your lips, Carmindy slammed. "It doesn't look good. It looks like you've been sucking on a bar of chocolate."

Instead, she advised over 50s to take a nude lip liner and "very lightly" line where their lip line is "to restore it", explaining that this provides a "much more natural" look.

"It looks crazy and everybody's going to look back and be like, 'Why did we do that?' she warned.

"All trends die, better to go with classic natural," the beauty guru declared.

But, for those who find their lipstick tends to "bleed" (that is, lipstick that ends up smudged outside the borders of your lips), Carmindy offered another useful tip.

"If your issue is bleeding lipstick, I recommend going with a clear lip liner pencil to lock and seal in colour," she said. "With this one, you go outside the perimeter of the mouth so its waxy texture will lock in any lipstick, lip gloss, or tinted lip balm that you'll be wearing."

Next, it's best to apply a hydrating lipstick; Carmindy recommends deploying a satin variety, which supports a smooth, plump finish.

But, for those who have a shakier hand when applying their makeup, there is no need to worry.

If you go beyond your lip line, make a mistake, or are just really keen on a sharp, clean edge, Carmindy offered her easy method.

"The best way to do it is to get a concealer brush and a little bit of concealer, and then just trace around the perimeter of your mouth for a flawless look," she advised.
