Sowing hardy annuals now could introduce swathes of colour to your garden in the coming months

The secret to every successful garden is organisation and dedication, but additional insight from experts can help guide you along the way.

Niall Gardens, an Irish gardener with a passion for flowers, recently used his YouTube platform to share a list of “great plants” he believes Britons “absolutely need to grow”.

“Over time you can easily build your own collection of great plants,” the garden declared. “Plants that are going to give you tasty food, loads of colour and scent from flowers and most of all, fill your garden all year around.”

Lupins

Often described as the flowers that keep on giving, lupins are beloved for their bold and colourful spikes.

The flowers thrive in a wide range of climates and soil types, making them an ideal choice for gardeners with limited experience.

The best time to sow lupins is around the first weeks of March after the seeds have been soaked in a saucer of water overnight.

“Even in year one, they’re going to produce some spires of flowers.” said Niall, "Once you get them in the ground they require minimal maintenance.”

The plants should be placed in the soil at the same depth they were in the container, according to the Royal Horticultural Society.

Planted correctly, the plants will produce columns of flowers ranging from deep aubergine to pastel pinks.

Hardy annuals

Another variety of plants easy to grow from seeds are hardy annuals, which produce long-lasting blooms.

“Hardy annuals are the perfect choice to get colour into your garden really quickly," explained Niall.

"Sow them now and you’re going to have loads of gorgeous flowers in a matter of a few short months.

“If you choose a hardy annual, that’s going to be tough enough to survive the cold, so you don’t need to worry about nurturing them too much. It makes them really easy to grow.”

One species of flowers in the hardy category that comes highly recommended by Niall is the cornflour.

This species thrives in sun and well-drained soil, creating blooms evocative of meadows and country gardens.

It comes as experts have shared different ways to use discarded products such as coffee grains and banana peels to vitalise plants.

British horticultural Monty Don has mapped out specific tasks to complete over the next month for a successful garden, citing lawn maintenance as a pivotal job.

Other experts have stressed the importance of pruning roses in the coming weeks to extend their lifespan.
