Carlos Alcaraz and Fabio Fognini played out a thriller at Wimbledon on Monday

John McEnroe has urged Fabio Fognini to retire immediately following his five-set defeat to Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon on Monday, calling it the ideal conclusion to the Italian's career.

The seven-time Grand Slam champion believes the 38-year-old's spirited performance against the defending champion would be the perfect final act.

"This was the perfect ending for Fognini," McEnroe told the BBC after watching the first-round match.

The American expressed hope that Fognini would not continue playing, suggesting he could not surpass this performance.

"I almost hope that he doesn't play anymore because I'm not sure he can play any better than that," McEnroe said.

Fognini, who is in his final season as a professional, twice fought back from behind to force a deciding set against the second seed.

Despite not securing a tour-level victory this calendar year, the veteran pushed Alcaraz to his limits in sweltering conditions on Centre Court.

The crowd rallied behind the Italian as he produced eye-catching trickshots and engaged in feel-good exchanges with his opponent.

McEnroe noted the remarkable physical disparity, saying: "Carlos looked more tired than Fognini even though there's a 16-year age gap! What in the hell is going on here?"

The American observed that crowd support shifted to Alcaraz late in the fourth set, which helped revive the defending champion.

McEnroe revealed his conviction was strengthened after speaking with Fognini's wife, former tennis player Flavia Pennetta, during a recent seniors event.

"I played Flavia Pennetta in seniors mixed doubles at the French Open and she thinks it's time for Fabio to be at home more with the kids," McEnroe explained.

The American suggested Pennetta, who retired from professional tennis a decade ago, is eager for her husband to step away from the tour.

"I think she is ready for her husband to be home more," McEnroe added, indicating family considerations are weighing on the decision.

Fognini himself hinted that retirement might be imminent during his post-match interview.

"It's tough for me to speak, believe me. But, yeah, I think this is probably the best way to say goodbye to Wimbledon, and maybe to tennis. That's what I'm thinking now," the Italian said emotionally.

He added: "I am happy, for sure. I have a lot of emotions coming to my mind."

However, Alcaraz offered a contrasting perspective, paying tribute to his opponent whilst questioning whether Fognini should retire after such an impressive display.

The defending champion's view differed from McEnroe's immediate call for the Italian to end his career.
