Brandon Lewis says he’s lost nearly five stone and admitted he was once mercilessly bullied over his weight.

The former Conservative party Chairman told GB News: “I had one of those moments a couple years ago when I hit 50 and I had a medical, and just thought it's either now or never.

“I've always been big so I just thought, right, I am going to go for it and I decided to lose some weight.

“I’ve now lost about 4 1/2 stone from where I was. I had a really bad chocolate addiction and all those starchy junk food things you shouldn't eat. So my joke to myself was always just stop eating the things you like. But I'm now just eating healthier and doing a bit of training but chocolate was my main problem.”

Last year Lewis, the former Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, shared a tweet on social media revealing he was bullied at school over his weight and dyslexia.

Outlining the bullying he endured he said: “I was bullied. It kind of changed my approach to things. You become a bit hardened, which is quite useful as a politician.

“I just found it made me just work a bit harder. I wanted to succeed, so you become a bit more focused, a bit more determined, a bit more driven. So in a sense, I've always tried to think of it in a positive sense. It gave me a bit of a thicker skin and stronger skin, which has hopefully stood me in some stead.

“I think when you see bullying generally the weakness is in the bully. Once you can get your mind straight about that, and once you recognize that, then whether it's a bully or anything else, it's their problem, not yours.”

Commenting on how he’s finding life on the back benches in his first interview since leaving the Cabinet, he told Gloria De Piero: “Having control of my diary for the first time in 10 years is very, very enjoyable I have to say, after lots of cancelled nights out with my wife and cancelled family holiday.

“I was very fortunate for 10 years, I had really interesting jobs all the way through. I very much enjoyed everything I did. I'm pleased and proud of what I did.

Offering his advice on where the Tories can improve he added: “We've got to be focused on making sure we're delivering for people and as a government that we're doing things with the public can see the government is focused on it.

“I think the public want to see that their government, whatever colour the government happens to be, is focused on the issues they care about. And that it's got ideas to deal with those issues.”
