Wayne Rooney has turned down the chance to return to club management

Wayne Rooney has turned down an approach from National League North side Macclesfield to become their new manager.

The non-league club contacted the 39-year-old's agent Paul Stretford this week about the vacancy, but the former Manchester United and England striker declined the opportunity after careful consideration.

The approach comes as current Macclesfield boss Robbie Savage edges closer to taking over at Forest Green Rovers.

Despite the ambitious move by the Silkmen to secure one of English football's biggest names, Rooney has decided against making himself available for the position.

Instead, the former England captain is focusing on media opportunities for the foreseeable future.

The move sees wife Coleen denied her wish after it was reported she was unhappy with her husband's time at Plymouth Argyle last season.

It meant that Rooney was over 250 miles away from their Cheshire family home, with Coleen and Wayne living a long-distance relationship while she also had to look after their four sons.

After getting the sack earlier this year at the Home Park Stadium, Rooney was reportedly told by Coleen to take a job nearer to home if he dips his toes back into club management.

There was speculation earlier this year that the Red Devils legend could take charge at Salford City, which is co-owned by his former team-mates including Gary Neville and David Beckham.

However, nothing came of these reports - though this job would have also pleased Coleen considering the proximity to their family home in Cheshire.

Rooney's managerial career began at Derby County before spells with DC United and Birmingham City.

He most recently took charge of Plymouth for the first half of last season.

United's all-time leading scorer is understood to have admiration for the work being done at Macclesfield.

However, according to reports, he did not consider the role the right move at this moment.

The 39-year-old hung up his boots before moving into management, but his time on the touchline has been mixed.

His focus now appears to be shifting away from the dugout towards broadcasting and punditry roles.

Macclesfield's ambitious approach represents the latest chapter in their remarkable journey since being founded as a phoenix club in October 2020.

The original Macclesfield Town were wound up, but under chairman Robert Smethurst's leadership, the new club has risen rapidly through the non-league pyramid.

The Silkmen began life in the North West Counties Football League Premier Division in the 2021/22 season.

Last season they secured promotion as Northern Premier League Premier Division champions under Savage's management.

Their swift ascent through the leagues has now taken them to the National League North.
