Labour extended eligibility for the benefit to nine million pensioners after facing months of strong public opposition

Andrew Pierce has called on Sir Keir Starmer to "step up" following fierce criticism of a video posted by the Prime Minister from his Chequers residence.

The GB News presenter expressed frustration at the Labour leader's social media post, which has drawn widespread condemnation.

The criticism comes as controversy continues over the Government's decision to restrict Winter Fuel Payments last year, with millions of pensioners losing out on £300 for individuals or £600 for couples.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has since announced a U-turn on the policy, so that pensioners with an income of £35,000 or below will now receive the Winter Fuel Payment.

In a video posted on X yesterday, Keir Starmer is seen walking through his Chequers residence and signing some papers at a desk. He captioned the clip: "I’m investing in the future of Britain."

Discussing the video on GB News, host Bev Turner said: "It has been watched half a million times, so not even that many for a Prime Minister.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

"It's been liked 2,000 times and there are 4,000 comments. I'm not exaggerating if I say 99.9 per cent of the 4,000 comments are negative."

Bev then began to read out the comments, with one X user named Queen Bee said: "Everyone hates you

Whilst another named Emma Rock penned: "You're destroying this country at a rapid rate. Your actions are beyond treacherous and anti-British." Melinda added: "Could you be more up yourself?"

A third person called Kevin fumed: "You're about as much use as a chocolate teapot."

Bev explained: "I know that X isn't necessarily the real world..."

Andrew interjected: "Well, it's a good way of people venting and telling us what they think."

Bev continued to read a comment from Dominic, who asked the Prime Minister "'As part of your research, will you read the comments?'

"And that's the point. If he was listening to the public, would he be putting out pointless, empty clips of himself? A little cinematic?" she said.

Andrew fumed: "Well, pathetic. He must do better. And I did have a very long conversation with the minister last week, and I said, why can't he raise his game?

"And what are they saying? Why can't he raise his game? And he said he's got a problem empathising. Understatement of the year, mate."

The star's angry criticism comes as the Government makes a significant U-turn, extending eligibility for the benefit to nine million pensioners after facing months of strong public opposition.

On Monday, the Chancellor revealed that pensioners earning £35,000 or less will now qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment.

This change will grant an additional 7.5 million pensioners access to the payment, meaning over 75 per cent of pensioners in England and Wales will now receive the support.

The payment, £200 per household or £300 for those with someone aged over 80, will be issued automatically this winter, with no need for pensioners to apply.

According to the Treasury, the revised policy will cost £1.25billion in England and Wales, representing a saving of around £450million compared to the previous system where the benefit was available to all.
