The tennis star has reacted after seeing Coco Gauff's small trophy

Andy Murray has criticised Grand Slam tennis tournaments following Coco Gauff's viral TikTok video revealing the diminutive size of her French Open replica trophy.

The British tennis legend took to Instagram to express his disappointment after the American champion's social media post exposed how winners receive miniature versions whilst the actual trophies remain with the tournaments.

"Surely the tennis majors can do a better job with the replica trophies?! They are tiny," Murray posted on his Instagram story.

Gauff's revelation came after she defeated Aryna Sabalenka 6-7 6-2 6-4 to claim the Roland-Garros women's singles title on Saturday, sparking widespread discussion about the practice.

In the TikTok video, Gauff explained the reality behind Grand Slam trophy presentations to her followers.

"This is trophy (Coupe Suzanne Lenglen) that you guy saw me take pictures with and do press with and all of that. But actually, we don't get to take that home," Gauff said in her video.

The 21-year-old demonstrated the stark size difference by placing her replica next to a Perrier water bottle.

"It stays with the tournament. I'm going to show you guys the one we take home. It's a lot smaller. It's a mini replica. To compare it, it's really small," she explained.

Despite the underwhelming size, Gauff maintained a positive outlook, adding: "That's how small it is. It's the memories that matter most. It's very pretty."

The video prompted immediate reactions from tennis fans on social media, with many expressing disbelief at the trophy's size.

"They should give you something better than that," one user commented on Gauff's post.

Another fan wrote: "That's wild and makes no sense for it to be small. As if they can't afford it."

Murray's intervention added significant weight to the criticism, with the former world No 1 declaring that major tournaments must improve their approach to replica trophies.

LATEST SPORTS NEWS:

His Instagram story post directly challenged the sport's most prestigious events to reconsider their current practices, echoing the sentiments of fans who felt champions deserved better recognition for their achievements.

The replica trophy policies vary significantly across tennis's four major tournaments.

At Wimbledon, champions receive replicas that are three-quarters the size of the original, whilst the Australian Open and US Open provide full-size replicas to their winners.

Speaking to TODAY, Gauff revealed her surprise at the French Open's approach: "Most tournaments will have the original that they keep with them, and then they give you home a replica.

"I didn't know it was going to be as small as it is. It is adorable. It looks just like the real one, just smaller."

The American's triumph marked a historic achievement, becoming the first player to win a women's singles Grand Slam final against the reigning world No 1 after losing the first set since Venus Williams accomplished the feat at Wimbledon in 2005.
