What a racket! It's now more expensive to park my car at station than take the train 25miles to Waterloo, rages Kelvin MacKenzie

Kelvin MacKenzie delivers his verdict on Britain's farcical councils

With little else to do but arrange for Securicor to bring their wages round in cash to their home, the ‘’management’’ at my local council have just had their annual get together to do the work they really enjoy; Jacking up car parking charges.

Unbelievably the cost of leaving your car for the day at the station car park in Weybridge, Surrey, has soared to £11.10p, up more than 10%. Plus, of course another 42p for our friends at Ringo.

What is the justification for this rise? It’s now more expensive to park your car than buy a ticket and actually take the train to Waterloo (£10.20 if you purchase in advance). What a bloody racket.

And as far as I can see none of the ruling councillors at Elmbridge (a motley collection of Lib Dims and Independents) raised a voice against it. You would have thought that ahead of the May elections there would be firebrands standing up against the increase.

I would be grateful if somebody could explain to the dolts on the council that having a car is not a luxury. Although at Elmbridge, the staff wouldn’t need one as they all work from home. I was at their Esher head office and could have fired a cannon and not killed an employee.

When I questioned their PR department about how many staff came in to work every week they wouldn’t say. The council has no right to deny council taxpayers that knowledge. Everybody knows productivity falls when WFH is the norm. Mind you, it couldn’t have gone much lower at the council in any event.

You will be unsurprised to learn that Adam Chalmers, the CEO of Elmbridge council, makes £136,000 for the tough job of counting the money as it comes in. He has the assistance of two strategic directors, one being paid £116,000 and the other £104,000. They are part of a growing number of council officials who are doing rather well while handing out inflation-busting council tax rises and justifying them by claiming to be skint.

There’s been some good work by the Taxpayers’ Alliance which shows that 3,106 council executives across the country received six-figure sums last year, up 347 on the previous year. Of these 829 received at least £150,000.

How hard is to run the council? The money flows in with the threat of being taken to court if you don’t pay. All the local council does is arrange for the bins to be collected and apologise when they aren’t.

The rest of the day the execs spend their time resisting the lure of going into the property market which has led to our neighbours at Woking Council going bust and Spelthorne on the verge of it.

As a priority, Mr Chalmers and his pals might start enlarging the size of the spaces in the station car parks. A study has shown motorists have an average of only 30cms, the height of a standard cereal box, between the side of their car and the edge of the bay. And that’s if they park perfectly in the middle.

Drivers, and that includes me, are often left struggling to get out of their cars because of the increasing size of the vehicles with the council halfwits deciding to keep the spaces the same size despite the growing size of Ford Fiestas (up from 11cm to 174cm) Vauxhall Corsa up 24cms, and the Mini up by 34cms.

This has led to me, and others, having to climb in the car through the boot. Clearly if this happens at night, other commuters believed that I had one drink too many and didn’t even know where the drivers’ door was. A local embarrassment.

There should a freeze on car parking charges for the next five years. People using the train are an important aspect of commercial life. Many are heading to work and although this may come as a surprise to local government officials (who don’t go anywhere, not even the office) we need commuters who create the wealth that give these 9-5ers a comfortable life.
