Hans Christian Wolters suggested the police "may know" the location of Madeleine McCann's murder

German Prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters has suggested that the police "may know" the location of Madeleine McCann's murder.

Wolters revealed in a new BBC documentary that the German police are "sure" that McCann, who went missing in May 2007 in Portugal, died there.

Madeleine, who was three at the time, disappeared from her Praia Da Luz family holiday apartment on the evening of May 3, and the mystery remains unsolved to this day.

Speaking to an investigative journalist in the latest film for Panorama, 'Prime Suspect: Who Took Madeleine McCann?', Wolters confirmed his suspicions.

Extensive searches have taken place since Madeleine's disappearance, including at a reservoir in Portugal in May this year, where forensic teams said at the time that they had retrieved "multiple items".

Speaking on the results of the search, Wolters admitted he "could not speak of the results" as they are still ongoing.

When asked if the German investigators are sure Madeleine is dead, Wolters simply replied "yes".

Wolters was then asked of the nature of her death and if it was possible that she was killed, to which Wolters confirmed "she killed in Portugal".

Wolters was then pressed by the journalist on whether the investigators know the exact location where Madeleine may have been killed.

Wolters simply stated: "Maybe".

The main suspect in the eyes of German and Portugese police is 46-year-old German national Christian Brueckner, who has always denied his involvement.

Wolters said Brueckner is currently their "one suspect" in the case.

Speaking to GB News about the BBC documentary and Wolters' claims, investigator Mark Williams-Thomas said the evidence against Brueckner is "weak".

Williams-Thomas said: "Let's be very clear. Christian B is a vile individual who's committed some horrific offences against children. That does not mean to say that he should be accused of the murder of Madeleine McCann, just simply because he got a nasty background.

"Hans Wolters is a prosecutor. He's very clearly saying that his belief is he [Christian B] killed Madeleine. Well, if he’s got that evidence then charge him."

Williams-Thomas continued: "I believe that on that night, Madeleine woke up - we know she woke up on the two previous nights - and Gerry and Kate on the morning of her disappearance did say to her that if you wake up in the middle of night again, we're only at the tapas bar which is just across the walkway of the swimming pool.

"I believe she woke up and went looking for mum and dad and as she walked out of the apartment, she walked out down the steps on to a public footpath before having to walk back in again. And I believe at that point that she was abducted."
