An advert released by Crown Paints has sparked outrage with people describing it as “misogynistic” and “massively offensive”.

The advert includes a song about a relationship between two characters Hannah and Dave.

The song states: "Now a baby's coming and they don't know what it is."

It continues by saying: "Hannah's hoping for a girl, Dave's just hoping that it's his."

The advert’s contents have been slammed by some, including comedian Jenny Eclair.

Ms Eclair wrote on Twitter: “I’m watching the #crownpaint ‘baby coming’ ad and I can’t be on my own thinking it’s beyond mad.

“’She’s hoping for a girl, he’s hoping that it’s his’ - I find this massively offensive.”

In a later post, Ms Eclair said: “Hey @crownpaintsget that offensive baby ad off air - what were you thinking !!!? What on earth possessed you?”

Others have also slammed the advert, calling it "misogynistic" and a "serious error of judgement".

The Advertising Standards Agency has said it has received more than 100 complaints about the ad and is "currently assessing carefully to determine whether there are grounds for an investigation".

A spokeswoman for Crown Paints said the Hannah and Dave series of adverts were "intended to be a humorous celebration of special life moments that prompt people to paint their homes, in this case focusing on Hannah and Dave, a happy couple expecting a baby together".

They told the BBC: "Whilst the ad has been broadly well received, we appreciate that people have differing views on humour and we apologise if any of the lyrics have caused offence."
