The Princess Royal capped her busy week of Royal Ascot with a trip to an agricultural show

Princess Anne was met with two farmers fast asleep as she toured the Royal Highland Show, just outside Edinburgh, on Friday.

The Princess Royal was pictured during an amusing moment as she was shown around the Highland Hall’s cattle stalls.

Anne was present at the agricultural show, the largest of its kind in Scotland, to observe various livestock competitions and greet both guests and farmers.

However, she was unable to speak with two workers who were caught in a deep sleep as she passed.

The Princess Royal was escorted around the event by James Logan, Chairman of the Royal Highland & Agricultural Society of Scotland, and Alex Paterson, its Chief Executive.

Logan and Paterson appeared to be amused by the scenes as, among the various prize-winning cows, they came across two rural workers fast asleep in two comfy-looking garden chairs.

Anne looked on, somewhat unimpressed, as an older farmer, clad in a tartan and a flat cap, and a younger worker in denim, were blissfully unaware of their surroundings.

Elsewhere during her visit, Anne met with local primary school children at the Royal Highland Education Trust Discovery Centre as they took part in activities.

The Princess Royal also observed various competitions, including her own beloved show jumping.

Princess Anne was present to observe the Queen's Cup being presented to the champion of the livestock entry competition.

This year, the prestigious award was given to Messrs Webster and Smith with their dairy goat, Guilden Elma.

David Tennant, head of the Royal Highland Show, celebrated: “We were very honoured to have welcomed HRH Princess Anne today and shared with her all of the great achievements from the Scottish agricultural industry.

“Friday at the Show has been a true sun-soaked spectacle, and we are thrilled to see our visitors and families enjoy all that the show has to offer.

“From sheep shearing to competitions, sheepdog skills to cookery demonstrations, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”

The show in Ingliston, Edinburgh, attracts around 200,00 guests annually to the four-day event.

Crowds flock to enjoy the huge range of food and drink, live music and agricultural competitions on display.

The Princess Royal’s visit to the show followed her appearance at Royal Ascot earlier this week in what has been a packed period for the hardest-working royal.

She played a central role during the King’s official birthday celebrations at Trooping the Colour and appeared in the procession at The Order of the Garter ceremony.

During her Ascot appearances, Anne came unstuck as her carriage was briefly forced to stop while riding in the Royal Procession to the races.

Anne was accompanied by her son, Peter Phillips, and his girlfriend Harriet Sperling during the procession.
