One woman has died and multiple others are injured after a serious motorway crash, which will see the M4 closed for most of the day.

Wiltshire Police announced the death of a woman in her 40s, who died on the scene, in a major crash on the M4 between Junctions 16 and 17.


The crash took place at 11.30pm on Sunday (June 22) evening. A woman in her 70s has sustained serious injuries.

National Highways has warned that the M4 westbound remains closed between Swindon and Chippenham for investigation work.

The transport authority warned that the stretch of motorway is likely to remain closed for the rest of the day.

Police added that five people in the same car suffered minor injuries, in addition to three people travelling in the other car.

Everyone involved in the accident on the M4 has been taken to hospital for treatment.

National Highways: South West announced that Wiltshire Police, South Western Ambulance Service and Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service were in attendance.

It added that its area team crews had been requested to attend the scene once investigations are complete. They will assess damage to the nearside barrier following the collision.

A Swindon Police spokesperson said: "Our Serious Collision Team are at the scene carrying out an investigation into what happened, and the motorway is likely to remain closed westbound for most of the day.

"We have received reports that a white vehicle may have been involved and left the scene."

The police are also calling for any witnesses who may have dashcam footage to come forward to assist with the investigation.

The police force added: "We appreciate this will cause disruption for a large number of people and thank you for your patience."

National Highways added that any motorists planning on using the M4 westbound or driving in surrounding areas should "allow for extra journey time".

There are currently delays of one hour against expected traffic levels between Junctions 15 and J16.

Traffic maps show long delays along the M4 and adjoining roads as National Highways continues to provide standard diversions and alternative routes for vehicles taller than 4.2 metres.

Drivers are being encouraged to follow the solid diamond diversion symbol on road signs along the M4.

Vehicles under 4.2 metres are advised to follow a diversion route

  • Exit the M4 westbound at J16 and on the slip road keep left, continuing straight at the traffic lights to join the A3102 towards Royal Wootton Bassett
  • Remain on the A1302 for approximately two miles to the roundabout with the B4042 at Royal Wootton Bassett
  • Take the second exit to join the B4042 and continue for approximately nine miles, passing The Common and Brinkworth, to reach the Priory Roundabout with the A429
  • Take the first exit onto the A429 and continue for roughly five miles to reach J17 of the M4

Vehicles 4.2 metres and taller are advised to follow a different diversion route

  • Exit the M4 westbound at J16 and on the slip road keep left, continuing straight at the traffic lights to join the A3102 towards Royal Wootton Bassett
  • Remain on the A1302 for approximately two miles to the roundabout with the B4042 at Royal Wootton Bassett
  • Take the first exit to continue on the A3102
  • Remain on the A3102 for 11 miles, passing through Church End and Hilmarton, to reach the roundabout with the A4 at Calne
  • Turn left onto the A4 and continue for approximately seven miles to the Chequers Roundabout at Chippenham
  • Take the third exit onto the A350 northbound at the Chequers Roundabout and continue for five miles to J17 of the M4
