A beauty influencer claims three steps in her skincare routine helped reverse her jowls

The jury is still out on the efficacy of non-surgical procedures for changing the structure of the face, but there is anecdotal evidence that some methods work.

One influencer claims facial massages, microneedling and facial yoga did wonders for her sagging jowls after she reached her 40s.

With consistent exercise, muscle memory may form under the skin and sagging can improve, according to Shelley.

She told her followers that as the fat in the skin starts to dissipate with age, the face becomes looser.

This is particularly useful when trying to avoid nasolabial folds around the nose, which become more pronounced with age.

Fortunately, Shelley discovered several techniques that helped rectify the sagging around her jawline without resorting to surgery and fillers.

“I had jowls,” Shelley told her followers on her YouTube channel GlowUpwithShelley. “I’m going to show you the things I did to eliminate sagging jowls, and I know that these steps will get rid of jowls up to a certain point."

The five steps that helped Shelley restore her skin were micro-needling facial massage and facial yoga.

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that encourages collagen production with the help of little sterilised needles.

It can help smooth, tone, and firm the skin around the haw jaw area, and has even become popular for treating additional issues like acne scars.

“Microneedling is really going to really help firm up the skin, I don’t just do it on my jowl and my neck, I do it on all my face because as the muscles get tighter all around, that’s going to tighten that jowl area," said Shelley.

“Another thing is using some kind of facial massage tool,” she added, showing her followers the sculpting facial roller that helped her.

“I literally used this every single night when I had jowls,” she said, noting that running the tool along the jawline and cheekbones worked best for her.

“I do that for a couple of minutes before applying my toner, or my essence. I run it along and really make sure I sculpt that area. I use it at night because it relieves tension in my face.”

The third method Shelley uses is facial yoga, which research shows reduces the appearance and severity of jowls by making the facial, jaw and neck muscles better able to hold their shape.

One 2021 review concluded that there is limited evidence that facial exercises can aid with facial rejuvenation.

Experts at Medical News Today propose the following exercises to improve the appearance of jowls:

  • Yawning and opening the mouth as far as possible, then closing it very slowly without letting the teeth touch.
  • Puckering the lips outwards. The exercise works best when done lying down, and by using the fingers to draw the sides of the mouth downwards.
  • Blowing the cheeks up as far as comfortable.
  • Chewing with the head tilted slightly up.
  • Grinning as widely as comfortable then slowly tilting the head up and and down.
  • Putting the lower lip on the top lip and tilting the head up.
  • Lying down flat, curling the neck in towards the chest with the tongue pressed against the roof of the mouth.
  • Saying the sounds “o” followed by “e”, using more force than usual and exaggerating mouth movements.
