The glorious sunshine and scorching temperatures are expected to be washed away in just days

Britons are braced for thunderstorms and heavy rain as temperatures are set to drop this weekend.

Weather experts predict the storms will hit on Sunday after slowly moving in from the Atlantic and will hit the western side of the country hardest.

Temperatures hit 30C again this week as the Met Office predicts mid-to-high 20C over the coming days before the settled spell comes to an end.

Forecasters don't expect temperatures to surpass the highest on record so far this year, but there will still be warm sunshine.

Thundery conditions are set to hit southern Ireland by Thursday before they move further westwards where there could be up to 25mm of rainfall within an hour.

Following flash floods and amber weather warnings last Monday, there is the possibility of "some quite heavy thundery downpours" on Sunday.

"Into the weekend this area of low pressure moves closer and actually particularly on Sunday there is the chance for some quite heavy thundery downpours to drive northwards across the UK," BBC forecaster Ben Rich said.

"So the increasing chance of rain, some of that heavy, as we go through the weekend, temperatures coming down just a little."

Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern added: "A much more showery outlook for the weekend and beyond with the chance of some heavy downpours and some thunderstorms especially towards the west and southwest."

Temperatures are expected to remain hotter than average for this time of year, but most regions across the UK will drop below the threshold for a heatwave.

According to the Met Office, a heatwave is defined as three consecutive days with daily maximum temperatures meeting or exceeding the heatwave temperature threshold, with the threshold varying in each county.

The agency's spokesman Stephen Dixon said: "The dry, fine and sunny weather is to continue for the next few days with temperatures peaking at 30 degrees in parts of England.

"Temperatures remain above average for the time of year in the mid-to-high 20s (and) dropping below those heat wave thresholds in some counties.

"On Thursday there is a chance of thunder moving into western areas of Northern Ireland, the west of Scotland, North West England and North Wales."
