The Northern Irishman will be hoping to win his second major of the year when the tournament commences on Thursday, having previously won the Masters earlier this year

Rory McIlroy is currently preparing to play at the US Open, with that prestigious competition set to get underway on Thursday.

Behind the scenes, however, the golfer is preparing for a big change in his personal life.

A year ago, McIlroy and wife Erica Stoll were heading for divorce. The news that the couple had split sent shockwaves around the golf world.

However, the couple then performed a late U-turn after reconciling their differences. McIlroy announced the twist in an interview with the Guardian, saying: “There have been rumours about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate. Responding to each rumour is a fool’s game.

“Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realised that our best future was as a family together.

"Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”

A year on, McIlroy and Erica appear to be happier than ever.

She was by her husband's side in April as he finally won the Masters, completing the career Grand Slam after 11 years of trying.

And once this week's US Open is out of the way, the couple will leave Florida and the United States behind in order to return to the United Kingdom.

The couple will be moving into a newly constructed mansion in Surrey, having lived together in the US for the past eight years.

Erica is American. However, McIlroy previously admitted that she doesn't like the sweltering Florida conditions.

On the Netflix show Full Swing, McIlroy discussed Erica's stance with German golfer Martin Kaymer.

Kaymer said: "I saw her [Stoll] at a Starbucks once, and she said, 'I really don't like the sun.'

"I said, 'Your state's called the Sunshine State, right?'"

McIlroy himself then added: "If it was up to her, she wouldn't move to England straightaway, but she definitely wants to spend more time there."

Having spent over €10million on renovations to their new Surrey home, finally the time for the couple to move back to the UK is nigh.
