The tennis star has sparked a backlash with his cheeky tweet

Andy Murray has been targeted by some fans online after congratulating Taylor Swift on winning the Super Bowl.

Swift was in the stands to watch boyfriend Travis Kelce in action as the Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers to win the prize for the fourth time in their history.

The pop star dominated the coverage, with cameras often panning to the 34-year-old in the stands.

After the Chiefs' win, mischievous Murray said online: "Congrats to @taylorswift13 on winning Super Bowl 58. A stunning performance."

But some fans opted to turn on Murray for his comments.

"Andy don't be ridiculous. Taylor was his support person just as your girlfriend turned wife was when you were playing tennis," said one user.

"BUT, I enjoyed seeing TS during the game. Just as I liked seeing Jimmy Connors when Chrissie played and Steffie when Andre played. Love is grand.:

A second said: "Calm down Andy she did nothing wrong but support her boyfriend we have had to see your mum for all these years."

A third quote-tweeted Murray's initial post before adding: "Andy Murray, a tennis player who had never seen an NFL game in his life."

A fourth simply said: "Bad post Andy."

And a fifth stated: "Jealously, Brittany Mahomes was shown just as much tonight.

"Comment when you start winning something."

Other fans saw the lighter side of Murray's comments, however.

One defended the Briton by saying: "It's crazy how much they've shown her. You'd think she was the driving force behind the whole thing."

Another Murray fan said: "Bahaha, spot on mate."

A third said: "Andy Murray being Andy Murray."

And a fifth quipped: "Hahahaahah I was waiting her to receive the damn trophy.

"She appeared more than the coaches on the transmission. Geez."

Swift and Kelce are unlikely to care about Murray's tweet, with America's biggest growing power couple set to celebrate the NFL star's triumph in the coming days and weeks ahead.

There had, prior to the Super Bowl, been talk of Kelce potentially retiring from American football.

Yet that's something the 34-year-old isn't interested, with the veteran eager to win the trophy again next year.

"The goal's always been to get three," he said. “But we couldn’t get here without getting to two. And having that target on our back all year.

"And I love these guys right here. The men that we just won this thing with … family forever, baby.

"I can’t be more proud of you guys. And how ’bout it? We get a chance to do it three times in a row!”

Kelce also praised coach Andy Reid, despite screaming in the face of the 65-year-old as tensions boiled over.

"He's unbelievable," Kelce said of Reid.

"And not only dialling up plays and having everybody prepared.

"He’s one of the best leaders of men that I’ve ever seen in my life.

"He’s helped me a lot with that... with channelling that emotion, with channelling that passion.

“I owe my entire career to that guy — and being able to control how emotional I get.

“I just love him, man.”
