The comments came during the England's first-ever loss against an African side

Roy Keane launched a scathing attack on Kyle Walker following England's disappointing 3-1 defeat to Senegal at Nottingham Forest's City Ground.

The former Manchester United captain accused the veteran defender of being "lazy" for his part in Ismaila Sarr's equalising goal just before half-time.

Speaking on ITV, Keane did not mince his words about the Manchester City defender's apparent lack of effort.

"You know what, if this is a young right-back coming into the game, you are thinking inexperience. But do you know what I think, people will say it's a lack of concentration, I think he is being lazy," Keane said.

The defensive lapse occurred when a ball was played over the top to Chelsea's Nicolas Jackson, who flicked the ball back across goal.

Sarr managed to beat Walker to the ball, who had been left on his heels, and glanced his effort into the corner past Dean Henderson, with the Walker left lying on the floor as the Crystal Palace winger celebrated.

Keane continued his criticism, stating: "He is a vastly experienced player who can't be bothered getting back in.

"As you know, tell defenders to get back in, and if it comes in you are ready for it. He is just on his heels, he almost can't be bothered to get back.

"I know he has had a difficult few months but for a vastly experienced player, you can't be making mistakes like that."

He also questioned England's collective standards, suggesting goalkeeper Henderson should have confronted Walker immediately.

"He should be looking at Walker, as experienced as Walker is, saying: 'Why aren't you getting back in?' Start pointing fingers, put the mans on people," he added.

The pundit, despite his elegance lying firmly with his native Ireland, expressed frustration with England's overall mentality: "Every time I watch England going back over the last few games I just think they can do a lot more.

"It's as if they are waiting to concede a goal and wait for a setback."

England's defensive frailties were further exposed when Habib Diarra scored a second goal for Senegal after another simple ball over the back four, with Myles Lewis-Skelly being caught out this time.

Henderson may also feel disappointed with Diarra poking the ball through the goalkeeper with ease despite the difficult angle.

Cheikh Sabaly added a third in stoppage time, completing a wonderful counter attack after an England free kick, compounding a miserable evening for Thomas Tuchel's side.

The German manager had made ten changes from the previous victory over Andorra, with only captain Harry Kane retaining his place.

Walker's return to the starting XI comes at a time when his position in the squad faces scrutiny.

The 35-year-old faces stiff competition from Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James and Tino Livramento for a place in future England squads.

Walker is not only facing struggles on the international stage, but he is in a precarious position at club level too.

After enduring a difficult first half to the year with Manchester City, the full-back joined Serie A giant AC Milan on loan with the club having the option to make the deal permanent.

However, the Rossoneri have now refused this option, leaving Walker unwanted in both Manchester and Milan and therefore looking for his next side.

His and England's performance last night would not have done any favours in his hopes at continuing playing football at the highest level.
