The tournament starts later this week, with both Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler eager to secure glory

Golf enthusiasts have taken to social media to express their fury over the exorbitant food and beverage prices at this year's US Open at Oakmont.

The tournament, which begins on Thursday, has already sparked controversy after concession menus were shared online.

The item causing particular outrage is a single banana priced at $1.95 (£1.44), prompting widespread criticism from fans.

One frustrated supporter posted: "$1.98 for a banana??? I'm taking my business elsewhere!"

Another fan expressed disbelief, writing: "$2 for a banana is crazy. Can get a bundle at the store for under $2!!! I am irate."

The banana pricing has become a symbol of what many consider unreasonable costs at the prestigious golf tournament.

The full menu reveals even steeper prices across the board. A Philly cheesesteak tops the food offerings at $13.95 (£10.33), whilst a packet of crisps costs $3.49 (£2.58).

Beverage prices are equally eye-watering, with a single Corona beer priced at $11.95 (£8.85) - particularly galling for UK viewers who can purchase a four-pack for £6 at Sainsbury's. Even bottled water commands $4.95 (£3.66).

One fan simply commented: "$5 for a water", whilst another declared: "$1.95 for a banana is outrageous."

The pricing structure has been widely condemned as a "disgrace" by golf supporters who feel the costs are excessive for a sporting event.

The pricing controversy becomes even more pronounced when compared to The Masters at Augusta, which maintains a notably different approach to spectator costs.

At golf's most prestigious tournament, sandwiches are available for either $1.50 (£1.16) for egg salad or pimento cheese options, or $3 (£2.32) for chicken salad, Masters club or ham and cheese varieties.

The most expensive snack item at Augusta is a Georgia peach ice cream sandwich at $3 (£2.32), with chips, cookies and candy all priced at just $1.50 (£1.16).

Soft drinks and hot beverages, including cola, iced tea, lemonade and coffee, cost only $2 (£1.55).

This pricing philosophy demonstrates Augusta's commitment to keeping the tournament accessible for fans.
