The Briton endured a difficult campaign with Max Verstappen and Red Bull dominating the grid

Lewis Hamilton is currently in the spotlight after a lacklustre end to the current F1 season.

The Stevenage-born racer could only finish ninth at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday, with Max Verstappen once again winning that event.

Hamilton has vowed to carry on but, with just two years left on his current Mercedes deal, his long-term future in the sport is up in the air.

So, after yet another turbulent season, GB News now takes a look at four reasons why the 38-year-old should consider bringing the curtain down.

Red Bull dominance

The first, potentially most obvious reason why Hamilton should consider walking away is due to the dominance of Red Bull.

They are levels ahead of the competition, which is why Verstappen was able to cruise to a third F1 crown of his career.

Hamilton admitted as such after the final race in the Middle East, saying: "For Red Bull to win by 17 seconds and they haven't developed their car since August is definitely a concern.

"We have learned a lot about the car and it's just down to the team now.

"They know what they need to do. Whether or not we will get there, we will see."

For Verstappen to win 19 races in a single season is extraordinary.

His appetite to keep winning remains intact and Red Bull are confident they can build on this season's success.

That doesn't bode well for Hamilton, whose motivation also seems to be waning in the wake of his alarming comments.

Mercedes face 'Everest'

Another issue for Mercedes is that there's no quick fix.

They will, of course, spend the next few months working to make a car capable of challenging Red Bull next term.

Yet while Toto Wolff is optimistic about the future, he's confessed they face a challenge like Everest if they're to close the gap.

"Mount Everest is in front of us," he said after the Abu Dhabi GP.

“We are changing the concept. We are completely moving away from how we lay out the chassis, the weight distribution, the airflow, literally every component has been changed because only by doing that do we have a chance [of beating Red Bull].

“You could get it wrong also. Everything is possible.

"There is always scepticism. But that is the mentality in the team that pushes us forward, to never give up.”

Given Hamilton has just two years left on his contract, time is of the essence.

That doesn't seem to be a factor on his side - meaning the veteran would certainly be wise to consider his options.

Hamilton is one of the best F1 drivers of all time.

That's why he's won seven crowns during his career, the same amount as icon Michael Schumacher.

Continuing could, however, tarnish his legacy.

Hamilton is known as a winner, as someone who has achieved just about everything there is during his spell in Formula One.

But if he keeps going he risks being remembered as someone who faded in his twilight years.
That's not the legacy Hamilton wants to leave behind and he'd prefer to be known as the champion he is, rather than someone who was unable to ever reel in Verstappen.

He has other plans for the future

F1 is Hamilton's life for now - but it won't always be.

He has other plans for the future and has admitted he'd love to become a father one day.

Hamilton also has other commitments, too.

He regularly advocates diversity in sport and could perhaps influence that greater in a behind the scenes role.

Hamilton also has a big interest in fashion, too, and would have plenty of offers if he opted to pursue a career in that industry.

Quitting F1 would allow him to make time for things he can't necessarily influence all the time.
