US voters are very concerned about immigration

MSNBC anchors were left in stitches as they mocked a poll suggesting immigration was the "number one issue" among voters in Virginia.

Speaking live on air, MSNBC anchors Jen Psaki, Joy Reid and Rachel Maddow were all left in fits of laughter after Maddow made a cheeky quip.

Pskari said: "I live in Virginia. Immigration was the number one issue".

Maddow then sarcastically responded: “Well, Virginia does have a border with West Virginia, a — very contested area” leaving her co-hosts in hysterics.

While the issue was cause for laughter among the MSNBC pundits, the problem of immigration is of huge concern to Americans.

Gallup polling shows 28 per cent of voters regard it as their main concern, ahead of the state of the government and the economy.

Migrant arrivals at the border have risen to record highs during President Joe Biden's administration, which could have a detrimental impact on the 81-year-old's hopes of reelection.

His likely opponent at this year's election is Donald Trump, who has repeatedly vowed to restore and expand the hardline immigration policies of his first term.

He has also promised to launch "the largest domestic deportation operation" in US history.

The issue has risen to prominence again after the alleged killing of a US student on a Georgia University campus by an undocumented migrant from Venezuela.

Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student at the University of Georgia, turbocharged the debate.

Trump blamed Biden’s immigration policies, writing: “An illegal alien migrant who was released into our country under Biden has been charged with her killing.

“Biden is preposterously trying to blame me and Congressional Republicans for the national security and public safety disaster he has created.”

Trump also labelled the suspect in the killing, Jose Antonio Ibarra, a “monster”, saying that he would “immediately seal the border” if he returned to office.

He added: “On day one, we will begin the largest deportation operation of illegal CRIMINALS in American History.”

In a statement, National Border Patrol Counsel chief Brandon Judd said: "Border security should never be about politics, it should always be about the safety and security of this great nation and the American people.”

Social media users took to X to respond to the remarks made on MSNBC, with one user branding the pundits "completely out of touch".

Business mogul Elon Musk was among those to respond to the footage, responding with an exclamation mark.

The SpaceX founder has been outspoken on border matters, demanding Joe Biden takes action.
