Keir Starmer welcomes Tory defector Christian Wakeford to the Labour Party

Labour leader Keir Starmer offered a "warmly welcome" to Christian Wakeford in the House of Commons as the former Tory MP crossed the floor to join Labour.

Starmer told Boris Johnson that Wakeford had "like so many people up and down the country, concluded that the Prime Minister and the Conservative Party have shown themselves incapable of offering the leadership and government this country deserves."

The Labour leader said his party stood ready to provide "an alternative government that the country can be proud of."
