The world’s fastest shark has been spotted off the Spanish coast by a “confused” photographer.
The shortfin mako shark, which can reportedly swim at speeds of 45mph and can reach up to 13ft in length, was spotted off the coast of Garraf, Barcelona.
Underwater photographer David Jara, who made the sighting alongside Carlos Molina, said he was at first “confused” after seeing a “large black shadow in motion”.
Mr Jara added that after some time to process things, the pair then approached the shark and began capturing images.

He told El Pais: “We saw a large black shadow in motion.
“We were a bit confused. But suddenly we saw something protruding from the sea.
"At first we thought it was a sunfish, but soon we noticed a dorsal fin.
"Then we approached, stopped at a safe distance and he also approached the boat. It was impressive”.
Mr Jara added that he was considering jumping into the water to get a better picture of the shark but said it "wasn't the right thing to do".
While marine biologist Claudio Barria said: "I have no record of a video made of a shortfin mako from underwater in the Spanish Mediterranean."
