The Briton finally fulfilled his dream of winning at home

McLaren driver Lando Norris won the British Grand Prix, largely due to the penalty that was given to Oscar Piastri, and now the Briton has been warned by his team principal for the remainder of the season.

Norris took victory after his team-mate, Oscar Piastri, was handed a 10-second penalty after a safety car restart infringement, leading to him finishing the race six seconds behind his McLaren pal.

The penalty was given after it was decided that the Australian had braked too aggressively, and it was concluded he was driving erratically, something that is very clearly frowned upon within the rules.

The win moved Norris to within eight points of his team-mate at the halfway stage of the championship; however, team boss Andrea Stella has warned Norris that Piastri will be back with a vengeance: “I have to say that the penalty was very harsh.

“There are a few things to review, but now the penalty has been decided and has been served. We move on. I’m sure Oscar will use this motivation to be even more determined for the races to come and try to win as many races as possible.”

Piastri was very blunt in his assessment of the race, telling British F1 legend Jenson Button after the race: “Apparently you can’t brake behind the Safety Car anymore. I did it for five laps before that and, again, I’m not going to say too much because I’ll get myself in trouble.

“But thanks to the crowd for a great event, thanks for sticking through the weather. I still like Silverstone even if I don’t like it today. Thanks for coming out everyone.”

When he spoke to the media later on, he offered more insight into his actions.

"I thought the penalty was pretty bad but, anyway, I’m glad we had a quick car today, showed what I needed to prove, and it’s just disappointing when what you deserve gets taken from you, but that’s how it goes,” said Piastri.

“I hit the brakes, saw the Safety Car lights went off so I didn’t accelerate again, and Max went past me which was a bit strange, and then I got a penalty for it so about as simple as that.

"The pace was good, I did everything I needed to, just didn’t get the result I deserved.”

Norris spoke after the race on how it felt to win his home Grand Prix.

“The last few laps I was just looking into the crowd,” said Norris.

“I was just trying got take it all in, enjoy the moment, because it might never happen again. I hope it does, but these are memories that I’ll bring with me forever so – an incredible achievement.”

Norris continued: “In terms of being a stressful race, this is as stressful as you can get. I mean, it was a good race for Oscar as well.

"I’ve got to give my credits to Oscar, he was fast the whole way. So, yeah, a round of applause for Oscar.

“He put up a good fight and I enjoy those moments together when we’re on track. Not as much when he’s ahead of me as when he’s behind, but that’s life. Credit to him and of course McLaren."

Piastri will look to go again in just two weeks, aiming to avenge the misfortune of this race.

The penalty now means the gap between the two McLaren teammates is just eight points at the halfway point of the season.
