Amelie-Osborn Smith, from Andover, Hampshire, was white water rafting in Zambia when the terrifying attack occurred.

An 18-year-old British backpacker has been attacked by a crocodile while travelling in southern Africa, resulting in her suffering from serious injuries.

Amelie-Osborn Smith, from Andover, Hampshire, was white water rafting in Zambia when the terrifying attack occurred.

The teenager was reportedly airlifted for emergency surgery, which eventually saved her life.

Amelie's father, Brent Osborn-Smith, said the crocodile saw his daughter's leg and thought, "there's lunch."

He added that his daughter is in a "pretty bad state at the moment" and the family are looking to "get her back to have some proper definitive care here."

He told the Daily Mail "She's been stabilised as best they can but it's still pretty touch and go and we're trying to arrange appropriate consultants here."

"My daughter was on a gap year to Zambia and it's a country we are fairly familiar with."

Zambia is currently on the Covid travel red list, adding further obstacles to the family's efforts in getting the 18-year-old back home.

The witness told The Sun that the croc eventually "gave up" after a friend is said to have dived underwater and punched the creature in a heroic effort.

Amelie is currently recovering in a hospital in the Zambian capital, 240 miles from where the incident happened.

It is not clear when the attack took place.
