A witness claimed they saw a man flick a lit cigarette into the vehicle

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a British Transport Police (BTP) van was set alight.

One witness claimed they saw a person smash the window and chuck a lit cigarette inside the vehicle parked outside Clapham Junction station.

Officers then reportedly attended to the van with a fire extinguisher.

BTP said online: "Following this incident, a man was arrested on suspicion of arson and is now in custody."

A spokesperson for the force said: "Officers received reports at around 6.19pm yesterday (22 May) of a fire within a marked BTP van on Brighton Yard outside of Clapham Junction railway station.

"Officers attended and a man in his 40s was arrested on suspicion of arson, and officers extinguished the fire."

The suspect remains in custody and enquiries are continuing.
