A beauty influencer has spoken of the benefits of oiling for a fuller head of hair

Applying natural oils to the scalp overnight may be the answer to healthier, stronger and longer hair, a beauty influencer has claimed.

Fifty-nine-year-old content creator Vicky Derosa claims castor oil has done wonders for her locks in a recent TikTok clip.

“If you struggle with hair loss, and your hair is just kinda icky and it’s not shiny and not thick anymore, I want to show you what I do at least once a week and I think it makes such a difference [to] my hair," she said.

“I take castor oil and I put rosemary drops into it. Rosemary oil really works for me so I take [it with] castor oil.

“For an entire month every single night this is what I did and I am telling you, I made my hair super healthy, and then it was ready for more colouring."

Vicky mixes a high-quality coconut oil - either cold pressed or organic virgin oil - with the castor oil and rosemary before dipping the tips of her strands into it.

She then lets the product sit in her hair the entire night before rinsing out the product in the shower the next day.

Slathering the hair in coconut oil can protect the locks from damage from other environmental factors like water.

Experts at Healthline said: “The hair cuticle is actually made up of flat, overlapping scales that are attached toward the root of your hair and point toward the tip.

"When the cortex of your hair absorbs water and swells up, these scales are pushed outward so they stick up. This makes wet hair much easier to damage, especially when brushing or styling.

“Applying oil to your hair before you wash it can reduce the amount of water absorbed by the hair shaft and the degree to which the cuticle scales 'stick up'. This makes it less prime to damage while it’s wet.”

Joyce Park, M.D., board-certified dermatologist at Skin Refinery and creator of Tea with MD, notes that while the benefits of coconut oil for hair are undisputed, there may be more effective oils for growth.

“Coconut oil has moisturising, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties that make it beneficial to hair, but it’s not suited for all hair types," the expert said.

“While [coconut oil] can help to strengthen hairs and reduce breakage, there are better remedies that grow thicker, fuller hair,” added the expert, citing minoxidil as a good option.

It comes as Vicky recently shared that she avoids using shampoo and conditioner too frequently to retain the thickness of her hair.

The beauty influencer confessed that she committed the mistake of washing her hair daily throughout her 20s, 30s and 40s.

“This is the secret to making sure that you have hair as healthy as possible,” the beauty influencer explained in a clip.

“Don’t wash your hair. Look, I don’t care if you think it’s yucky. If you wash your hair every single day it is just not good for it."
