Silent Witness aired a huge twist in its latest episode

A number of Silent Witness viewers have called for the series to be axed as they expressed confusion over the latest episode.

Fans slammed the storyline of the latest instalment on Wednesday, which saw protagonist lab assistants Nikki Alexander (played by Emilia Fox) and Jack Hodgson (David Caves) embroiled in an international deepfake scam.

The BBC crime drama is currently on its 27th series but some feel it’s time for writers to call it a day.

The mystery which the pair were looking into involved the strange death of a Burmese man who was found dead on a beach.

After realising the toxicology results had been falsified, the two characters ended up unveiling a corruption involving Burmese police and deepfake technology.

Many people tuned into the episode not only found it hard to follow but also blasted the “unrealistic” plot.

One shared on X, formerly Twitter: “Really time to finish this programme for good. The plots are unrealistic, and the main personalities feel they can substitute themselves for police officers questioning or doing routine enquiries. Reality might be boring, but that's the way things are. #SilentWitness.”

“Woww #Silentwitness is the biggest load of s*** ever now. 2 lab assistants break international social media corruption, murders and international assassins,” another remarked.

A third fumed: “#SilentWitness didn’t make sense to me tonight! What happened to the lady? Did she die? Did she survive? Whose funeral was Jack and Nikki at ??”

Another disgruntled viewer complained: “Shocking storyline #SilentWitness Stick to bodies & complicated post mortem’s rather than idiotic global app warfare which has absolutely nothing to do with The Lyall Centre #BBC.”

“That was a very rushed ending and I definitely didn't get all of it #SilentWitness,” a fifth admitted.

“Yep bo****** as ever. Did not follow that s*** one f***ing bit #SilentWitness,” someone else fumed.

However, not everyone took such an extreme view on the episode, with some applauding the instalment for bringing the show “back to its roots”.

“I really enjoyed seeing more lab scenes this series. I feel like the show had drifted away from the autopsies & science a bit too much in recent runs. Great to see it going back to its roots! #SilentWitness,” a fan enthused.

“#SilentWitness is back on form this season (last couple were a bit rough). Also, forgot how great an actor John Hanna is,” another praised. (sic)

The series has been celebrated as the world’s longest-running crime drama, and Fox has been the leading lady since taking over from Amanda Burton back in 2004.

However, it seems not all fans are keen for the record-breaking show to keep going.

While a series 28 release date hasn’t been set, it seems there are no current plans for the programme to come to an end.
