Championship implications shifted dramatically when Max Verstappen's race ended on the opening lap following contact with Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli.
The Dutchman now trails the championship leader by 61 points.
Piastri mounted an aggressive challenge from the outset, overtaking Leclerc at the first corner after the Ferrari had split the McLarens in qualifying.
The Australian's determination peaked on lap 11 when he briefly seized the lead at Turn Three, though Norris reclaimed the position at the following corner.
The intensity escalated on lap 20 when Piastri executed a late dive down the inside at Turn Four.
He locked his brakes and came perilously close to colliding with the rear of Norris's car, narrowly avoiding what could have been a catastrophic incident for both McLaren drivers.
The near-miss prompted Norris to pit at the conclusion of that lap, whilst Piastri extended his stint for three additional laps.
During the middle stint, Norris appeared to have control of the race. However, following their final pit stops on laps 53 and 54 respectively, Piastri mounted another determined assault on his team-mate's lead.

Emerging from his stop four seconds behind, the Australian rapidly closed the gap.
With 10 laps remaining, he had reduced the deficit to just two seconds, prompting a concerned Norris to radio his engineer Will Joseph: "Need some pace - please help."
Despite carrying front wing damage, Norris responded to the pressure and managed to stabilise the gap.
He maintained his advantage through the closing stages to secure a crucial victory, particularly significant after his collision with Piastri ended his Canadian Grand Prix two weeks earlier.
