Barbara Stange-Alvarez destroyed a large assortment of alcohol as she went on a bottle-smashing rampage in Aldi, St Albans Magistrates' Court was told.

A 36-year-old smashed £10,000 worth of alcohol in a shop due to her "losing the plot" during lockdown, a court has heard.

Barbara Stange-Alvarez destroyed a large assortment of alcohol as she went on a bottle-smashing rampage in Aldi, St Albans Magistrates' Court was told.

The 36-year-old from Stevenage used her arm to sweep hundreds of bottles off the shelves, a judge heard.

Broken glass is seen scatted all over the floor in shocking footage from the scene on November 25, 2020, along with huge puddles of alcohol.

Stange-Alvarez slipped on the mess and sliced her hand open in the process.

She yesterday pleaded guilty to criminal damage, racially aggravated common assault and a racially aggravated public order offence.

The latter offence was obtained for shouting insults at a security guard at the hospital where she was taken to treat her hand wound.

Prosecutor Clinton Hadgill told the court: "She made her way directly to the aisle where the alcohol is and proceeded to drag hundreds of bottles of alcohol off the shelf".

He added that the offender went back to the beginning of the aisle in order to repeat the exercise.

The defendant then slid and fell onto the glass, about 90 seconds into the incident, the prosecutor said.

Stange-Alvarez was not finished there, as she proceeded to grab single bottles and hurl them to the floor.

Mr Hadgill said a security guard from another store had to restrain the 36-year-old until the police arrived.

The prosecutor said the 36-year-old was taken to Lister Hospital by officers, where she kicked a security guard in the shin and unleashed racial assaults at him.

She told him: "You Indian people. I pay my taxes for you to be in this country. Go back to your own country, I hate Indians".

She later said to one policeman while she was being booked into custody: "I did not say Indian f....., I said Kashmir f....."

Stange-Alvarez claimed in an interview that she was suffering from mental health issues at the time, due to having depression, no job and an abusive relationship.

She said that she was not receiving the treatment she felt was needed.

Stange-Alvarez had attended a mental health clinic before visiting Aldi that day, and says she "lost the plot" after being unhappy at the advice received.

The 36-year-old represented herself in court, and revealed she had been unable to work in 2020, which resulted in her "struggling".

District Judge Margaret Dodd told her that "lots" of people had faced similar issues during the pandemic.

She was given a 12-week jail sentence, suspended for 18 months.

Stange-Alvarez was also made the subject of a Mental Health Treatment Requirement as well as Rehabilitation Activity Requirement.

She told that judge that "it wont happen again" as she was ordered to pay Aldi £5000 in compensation, along with court costs of £85.
