Two students and a caretaker were killed in a devastating knife attack

An eye-witness broke down in tears as he explained seeing a suspect arrested on suspicion of murder trying to break into his residential building in Nottingham.

Two Nottingham University students - Barnaby Webber and Grace Kumar - were among three killed in the horrific knife attack in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Police say a van was stolen from third victim, Ian Coates and was later used to run over three people.

Speaking on GB News Jason Derbyshire, who is a resident inside the building the 31-year-old suspect tried to break into, shared his horrifying ordeal.

He told Home and Security Editor Mark White: "I woke up about 5.15, I normally wake up quite early to go to work. I've not been here long.

"I opened the curtains and there was just some guy stood under this archway all dressed in black, got a black ruck sack, black beanie, just staring at the edges over there.

"Went back in my room had a wash, 30 seconds later there's banging, loud banging, trying to get through that window.

"I didn't see the security guard come out, but apparently he did. The guy asked him, is it a hospital or a hostel?

"He went no, it's a hostel. And then he just came back through this archway and just walked off dead calm."

Nottinghamshire Police were called to Ilkeston Road in the student-dominated area of Lenton at 4am on Tuesday after Webber and Kumar were stabbed to death.

Coates was found knifed to death around two miles away on Magdala Road just one hour later.

Police are said to be keeping an "open mind" over the motive of the city attack, but at this time believe there is no one else outstanding in connection with the incidents.

Derbyshire added: "This is like a culture shock to me. You don't expect that on your doorstep.

"And like I say when it happened, I didn't even know what he done when he got down the road.

"I'm a father, so it's absolutely horrendous. How someone can do that, I don't know, I really don't know. They got all the lives in front of them, so young."
