The teenager defended United following his World Darts Championship defeat

Luke Littler jokingly questioned a Sky Sports presenter who laughed when they asked him about his beloved Manchester United.

The 16-year-old darts sensation was quick to defend the Red Devils despite their poor start to the season under Erik ten Hag.

Littler received messages from current United players and legends of the past during his run to the World Darts Championship final.

It inspired him to reach the final hurdle before he was beaten by new world No 1 Luke Humphries on Wednesday.

Littler was named as one of the wildcards to enter the 2024 Premier League Darts on Thursday, a 17-week competition that starts in February.

He was in the Sky Sports News studio to react to the news and was interviewed by Emma Paton, who fronts the TV organisation's darts coverage.

Paton, a United fan herself, asked Littler about United's performance this season having already lost 14 matches in all competitions.

She said: "Luke, you've got messages from David Beckham, Luke Shaw, Gary Neville.

"It's no secret you are a Man United fan, what do you make of their season?"

But Paton asked the question with a slight chuckle, as it is clear that United have hugely underperformed this term.

And Littler questioned what she found funny, replying: "Why you laughing? Why you laughing?"

The teenager did eventually answer the question and has backed Ten Hag to turn things around at Old Trafford.

He said: "It's been difficult with the injuries we've got and everyone's saying Ten Hag out and this and that.

"But I say give him time and when the players are all back fit let's see who he chooses."

United are unlikely to make any major signings in the January transfer window as they battle Financial Fair Play limitations.

However, Littler would love to see them splash out big money on a new striker, namely Victor Osimhen.

He added: "We just bought Rasmus Hojlund for loads of money but I'd probably get Osimhen from Napoli."

Littler, who is also a fan of rugby league side Warrington Wolves, admits he has been overwhelmed by the messages he has received from some of his heroes.

"I’ve got a lot of followers now," he said earlier this week.

"I got a message off Luke Shaw from Manchester United, Rio Ferdinand and I had a message off Gary Neville and Jonny Evans before my game against Barney [Raymond van Barneveld], I think.

"It’s just crazy. People who I’ve looked up to and especially my club Manchester United wishing me luck."

Meanwhile, presenter Paton has been proven right with her comments made about Littler before the World Darts Championship began.

She told the public to keep an eye on the youngster ahead of his opening match against Christian Kist on December 20.

She said: "On the evening of Wednesday December 20, make sure you sit down and watch Luke Littler. Please!

"He is without a doubt the debutant I'm most excited to see at the Palace.

"The 16-year-old was crowned World Youth Champion a few weeks ago and we really got a glimpse of what he can do on a big stage.

"The youngster has picked up five titles on the Development Tour this season – averaging over a ton on 22 occasions – and he landed a first nine-darter at a PDC event too. He's box office, trust me."
