Everton struck late to secure a home draw against Tottenham

Tottenham missed the chance to move level on points with north London rivals Arsenal after they conceded a late equaliser and drew 2-2 against Everton at Goodison Park in the first Premier League game of the weekend.

A brace from Richarlison either side of a scrappy Jack Harrison goal looked set to give Spurs all three points on Merseyside but Jarrad Branthwaite had other ideas.

Richarlison opened the scoring with a volley on his first appearance back at Everton since leaving in 2022 and curled in an unstoppable second from long range to double his tally for the day.

But Everton stayed within touching distance in the second half and Branthwaite headed home deep into stoppage time, as GB News analyses four talking points from a dramatic match.

Guglielmo Vicario has largely been considered as one of the best signings of the season in the Premier League.

However, a weakness in the Italian's game could now give Ange Postecoglou a headache.

The goalkeeper was caught out at a corner during the FA Cup fourth-round defeat to Manchester City last month.

Vicario and Spurs were adamant he was fouled but the referee and VAR deemed there to have been no offence.

Everton, who have scored the second-most goals from set-pieces in the top flight, clearly targeted that area of his game today.

Every corner was put on top of Vicario and he was troubled by a large majority of them, especially in the first half.

Everton's opening goal came when the 27-year-old failed to get a big enough hand on Dwight McNeil's corner, with VAR again saying there was nothing doing.

Postecoglou would have been delighted with Vicario's first six months at the club but the last couple of weeks have exposed a frailty that opposition can target moving forward.

Vicario, to his credit, was better in the second half but Everton will be disappointed with their delivery.

The 27-year-old may also be disappointed he wasn't able to beat Branthwaite to the ball for the hosts' winner.

Richarlison on fire

He may have had the debut season to forget, but Richarlison is now in arguably his best form in English football.

The Brazilian has made up for Son Heung-min's absence by scoring nine goals in his last eight league appearances.

Son looked to take on the mantle following the departure of Harry Kane last summer.

But the South Korea star can't do it all on his own and Richarlison has proven he can step up to the mark.

After being handed their 10-point penalty, Everton went on a run of four wins in a row.

Today's result means they have not won any of their last six in the top flight.

However, Branthwaite's late goal has taken them out of the relegation zone for the time being.

If their appeal against the deduction isn't successful, or if they get punished further, then they are deep in the relegation mire.

But Sean Dyche will take heart from today's performance, knowing his team will never give up.

Spurs miss opportunity

Tottenham came out of the rut they went through following that dramatic defeat at home to Chelsea earlier this season.

Micky van de Ven and James Maddison are both back from long-term injuries, while players who were at the Africa Cup of Nations and Asia Cup are either back or soon returning.

However, they will feel today's result was a missed opportunity to send a message to their rivals.

A faltering Aston Villa will now be boosted ahead of their match away to Sheffield United this evening.
