Many millions have been scared witless again about the prospect of nuclear warfare, after two years of Covid propaganda.

Emotions are running high. I understand that.

Many millions have been scared witless again about the prospect of nuclear warfare, after two years of Covid propaganda.

Many millions more are furious that the West has allowed Putin to go to war.

There are almost as many who disagree with my position that we must be tough with Putin. These folk believe in a long-term strategy of appeasement – reassuring the Russian President that expansionism around the EU and Nato is a thing of the past to try and halt the march of the mad man.

On top of all that, many of the scenes coming out of Ukraine over the past 24 hours are nothing short of heart-breaking, as the seemingly indiscriminate bombing continues across the country as the Russians continue their march towards the capital Kyiv at this hour where the inspirational president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has bravely refused American evacuation, declaring…

“We need ammo, not a ride.”

But tonight, I want to pay tribute to the brave Russian resistance.

The thousands of citizens across Putin’s communist regime risking it all – their jobs, their reputations, maybe even their lives – to take to the streets and show their fury at his illegal invasion of Ukraine.

More than 5,500 Russians have been detained at anti-war protests since Thursday, according to the OVD-Info monitor.

In Moscow, where riot police have been ready to make arrests, there were Russians carrying peace signs and wearing masks with the word Enough covering their mouths.

In Saint Petersburg, hundreds of anti-war protesters have stood together, linking arms and chanting.

I've spent weeks calling out the authoritarian tactics of Trudeau in Canada and Ardern in New Zealand, who have followed the Putin playbook to crack down on vaccine mandate protestors.

But there's a certain irony seeing the Putin apologists turn a blind eye to the widespread police action against the brave Russian souls taking to the streets, even though they face jail, lifetime criminal records, police brutality and, in some cases, deportation.

The protests also suggest Putin is losing the information war, not just internationally but at home too.

Young Russians under 40 aren’t glued to the constant Putin propaganda spewed out by the state-controlled TV stations, which warn protestors they are committing treason.

Social media is allowing Russians to see the full extent of the casualties, with thousands of their own soldiers already dead.

Russian 18-year-old Daria Lykova posted…

“Putin’s “peaceful demilitarisation” is a war crime of an international scale. I’m in close contact with my loved ones in the victim state. Their houses are shaking from explosions. They can’t sleep, eat, or merely exist in peace. Everyone is scared.”

Celebrities and Russian businesspeople are risking Putin’s wrath too.

Evgeny Lebedev, owner of the Evening Standard, wrote…

"As a Russian citizen I plead with you to stop Russians killing their Ukrainian brothers and sisters. As a British citizen I ask you to save Europe from war."

Author Alexander Tsypkin wrote…

“This is a mistake that can lead to a total disaster. Recognising the independence of the disputed territories is one thing. Bombing is another.”

Putin’s goddaughter Ksenia Sobchak said…

“We are all now trapped in this situation. No exit. We, the Russians, will be dealing with the consequences of today for many years to come.”

The Russian news agency TASS was hacked today, with this anti-Putin message posted…

"We urge you to stop this madness, do not send your sons and husbands to certain death. Putin is forcing us to lie”

I’m proud of this resistance within Putin’s own territory.

We must back these brave Russian freedom fighters – thousands of whom are already trying to emigrate to the US – because they are the future of a post-Putin Russia.
