'The difference between 1997 and now is that Blair had shifted New Labour onto the common ground'

The idea that there is no difference between the Conservatives and Labour is the biggest myth in politics today.

It is put about by Labour to reassure Conservative voters that they can vote Labour without any fear.

It is exactly what Tony Blair and New Labour did in 1997. The difference between then and now being that Blair had shifted New Labour onto the common ground. Not the centre ground, but onto the policies that most voters supported whether they be to the right, centre or left.

In many areas, New Labour parked their tanks on traditional Conservative ground. Remember "tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime".

Keir Starmer’s Labour have done no such thing. Their policies are from the left and certainly not on the common ground.

Let us look at the main area where there is a massive chasm between the Tories and Labour on this vital point of national interest.

The economy effects everyone and is the most important issue. The basic philosophy of Conservatives is to cut taxes, reduce public expenditure and shrink the state.

Whereas Labour believe in higher taxes, higher public spending and state control. Conservatives believe in personal responsibility and Labour, state regulation.

Hang on a minute I hear you say, under this government we have record high taxation and massive public spending. How is that different to Labour?

The objective answer is simple. Covid was an event the likes of which we had never seen before. It was of such a magnitude that the government stepped in to protect individuals. It provided income through the furlough scheme and supported businesses through cash grants and loans.

At the same time the economy ground to a halt. All this resulted in huge public spending, debt and higher taxes. The government felt it was their duty to act.

Then as Covid was defeated, the war in Europe broke out causing another huge economic shock. Energy prices shot up to unbelievable levels. This left the government with no option but to provide massive government support again.

Then there was the huge expenditure in supporting Ukraine. All led to more taxes, debt and public expenditure. But the Conservative government has got us through all this and the economy is growing.

The government is now cutting taxes. This year we have seen a major tax cut. The National Insurance Contribution cut is worth £900 to the average worker.

Inflation is falling rapidly and at the same time wages are going up, meaning real income levels are increasing.

In other words, people are better off. Interest rates are predicted to fall soon, making mortgages cheaper.

There are 4 million more people with a job than in 2010 and unemployment is low. It should be remembered that every Labour government has left office with unemployment higher than went they came into power.

Labour just do not support this approach. They just want to spend more and more. Their green energy policy alone would add £28billion to public expenditure.

In short, they want to spend, tax and borrow. A massive difference between the Conservatives and Labour.

On other issues such as immigration, Brexit, health, and the ‘woke’ agenda, there are the most enormous differences between the two parties.

The biggest lie in British politics is that Labour and the Conservatives are the same.
