A royal insider and biographer has said that Prince Harry looks 'miserable' and claims that the royals are happiest when they live a life of duty
Hugo Vickers, biographer of the Duke of Kent, said that Royal family 'do not tend to find happiness when they choose their own path' over their duties.
Vickers said that the Duke of Sussex appears 'miserable' much like his great-grand uncle Edward VIII who abdicated after only 325 days on the throne in order to marry Wallis Simpson. Vickers observes that by choosing to prioritise his relationship, Edward was led to 'sadness'.
Speaking at the Henley Literary Festival, Mr Vickers said: 'As for members of the Royal family stepping away, I don’t think it usually leads to happiness in the long run.'
'I don’t think it did with the Duke of Windsor.'
'As for the Duke of Sussex, who knows what is going to happen to him, but he looks utterly miserable.'
In 2021, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who had stepped away from their royal duties, confirmed that they would not return to their former roles.
The author has argued that “the most successful members of the Royal family” are those who “support” the monarch rather than “compete” with them - citing the late Queen’s cousin the Duke of Kent as a perfect example of a royal tirelessly devoted to their duties.
He said: “I don’t see how you can have a slimmed-down monarchy. Because people do want members of the Royal family, particularly if it's to do with charity. You do need members of the Royal family to do these things. They do perform a very, very useful role.”
The Sussexes have released a series of photographs from their most recent visit to the UK, taken by celebrity photographer Misan Harriman.
The portraits were taken ahead of the couple's visit to the One Young World summit in Manchester, moments before Meghan addressed the event about 'empowerment'.
The images were released just two days after the Royal family shared an official portrait marking the end of the mourning period following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.
The image featured King Charles III, Queen Consort Camilla and the Prince and Princess of Wales.
