Drivers were hit by £700,000 of parking fines every day across the UK last year after councils increased their restrictions.
Motorists were fined £254.9million last year, the equivalent to £700,000 a day.
According to figures obtained by Churchill Motor Insurance through freedom of information requests to councils, 63 percent of councils increased the number of roads that had parking restrictions.
The increase means that 80,200 roads now have some form of parking measures on them.
That is around one in ten roads in the country.
Nicholas Mantel, Head of Churchill Motor Insurance, said: “Parking is one of the most stressful aspects of driving, especially for families, who are often stretched for time and who don’t want their car too far from their ultimate destination.
“It is becoming increasingly difficult for motorists in towns and cities across Britain to find spots to park, especially for free, as local authorities seek to reduce congestion and put ever more controls in place,” he told the Telegraph.
A total of 5.2million penalty charge notices (PCNs) were issued across Britain last year, while nearly two million were handed out in London, the research added.
The national figure equates to 10 parking fines every minute.
The PCN figures are an eight percent rise on 2020’s levels.
