Lidl shoppers could benefit from rewards when recycling in stores

Lidl will trial a new recycling scheme in all 21 stores across Glasgow.

Shoppers will be able to bring back their plastic bottles and get cash for each eligible item returned.

No markup has been placed on the retail price of the bottles but customers will get 5p back for the return.

The cashback can be used to shop in stores or be donated to Lidl's charity partner The STV Children's Appeal.

If the pilot is successful in Glasgow's 21 stores, it could be rolled out further.

There is no limit on how much cashback one shopper can get and bottles from any retailer will be accepted. These need to be clean and uncrushed to qualify.

The new scheme comes as the Scottish Government delayed the introduction of its Deposit Return Scheme from the original launch date of August 16, 2023.

Lidl's scheme means shoppers will still benefit from recycling without a markup on the original price, as would apply through the Deposit Return Scheme.

The rollout is estimated to result in at least 10.5 tonnes of plastic and aluminium material being recycled every month. The trial begins today and will run until August 11, 2024.

Chief commercial officer at Lidl GB Richard Bourns commented: “We’re on a mission to eliminate all unnecessary waste, and with over 95 per cent of our own-brand packaging now recyclable, reusable, or refillable we’ve been making great progress.

"We know that Lidl shoppers share this passion, and we hope that utilising this infrastructure, which might otherwise have been left dormant, will help to make recycling their cans and bottles even more convenient for them.

"With our extra incentive thrown in, and no cap on the number of items that can be recycled, it’s a win-win for all.”

This comes as Tesco announced it will make big changes in 200 UK stores.

It has rolled out a new menopause section for the "first time ever" that is dedicated to menopause products.

This will improve access to more than 450 curated products for menopausal women.
