Olive oil can be used as a tool for those looking to slim down, according to a nutritionist

Taking a shot of olive oil every day could help with weight loss by "reducing body fat".

An expert explained how it can speed up the metabolism, suppress the appetite and promote fat-burning.

Diet is key when it comes to losing weight and choosing the right foods is important for weight loss and overall health.

Sports nutritionist at Bulk.com Abigail Roberts discussed the weight loss benefits of taking a shot of olive oil daily.

Olive oil is high in healthy fats

She said: "Olive oil helps you lose weight because it is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids.

"These are known to help with weight loss by increasing your metabolism, reducing your appetite and reducing your body fat.

“Studies have revealed a treatment group who were given extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) lost 80 per cent more body fat than the control group who didn’t consume EVOO.

“In the long-term, olive oil continues to have positive effects on the body and keep the weight off or stable."

A study published in the National Library of Medicine found eating more monounsaturated fats is better for weight loss and maintenance than saturated fats.

As olive oil is a good source of monounsaturated fats, it could be one way to get this into the diet.

However, more research is needed into the specific benefits of taking a shot of olive oil daily.

Slimmers looking to add olive oil into their diet can do so by consuming it on its own or adding it to a meal, the expert suggested.

She continued: “If you don’t want to shot it on its own, you can choose to incorporate it into a meal of your choice. For example, drizzle onto an eggs and avocado dish or a lunchtime salad.

“Whilst there is no research to support whether it should be taken on an empty stomach, it is important to be aware that eating or drinking excessive amounts of oil at once can make you feel a bit nauseous."

Olive oil is also high in calories, so dieters should watch how much they have when trying to lose weight.

There are lots of diet plans available for Britons looking to lose weight and improve their health.

An intermittent fasting plan can "train your body to burn fat", according to an expert.
