Wet and windy weather through the next couple of days will blight Scotland and northern England

Britain’s chaotic weather is about to get another shake-about in the aftershock of a ‘potent’ tropical storm.

A barrage of Atlantic cyclones hurtling towards the UK will include the corpse of Tropical Storm Dexter, currently whipping waters off the United States coast.

While not as violent as Storm Floris, whose 100mph gusts left swathes of the UK in chaos last week, experts warn it could pack a punch.

As the storm passes over the tip of Scotland, it is northern Britain that will bear the brunt.

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkill said: “The origins of one low pressure are Tropical Storm Dexter, which is in the west Atlantic butforecast to push its way eastwards towards the UK.

“By the time it reaches us it will be highly modified, but it could be quite a potent feature.

“It is quite a deep low, not quite as deep as Floris, and it is a little bit further northwest of the UK.

“So, the most likely outcome is that it brings some wet and some windy weather to the north of the UK as we go through Sunday into Monday.”

The storm will be driven by a ‘trough’ of the jet stream high in the atmosphere, feeding it energy, he explained.

He said: “I am expecting this low to keep its energy as it comes across the Atlantic because of an upper trough digging down and mixing with it.

“Then it comes across as quite a feature, and it will bring some wet and windy weather towards the northwest.”

Storm Dexter will flail its death throes amid a barrage of cyclonic storms ploughing across the north Atlantic.

Wet and windy weather through the next couple of days will blight Scotland and northern England.

Meanwhile, southern Britain will enjoy the best of the sunshine, dry skies and rising temperatures, Burkill added.

He said: “There is a low-pressure centre coming through on Thursday, and another as we go through Friday, and that is also going to bring some wetter perhaps windier weather across northern parts.

Wind gusts could also tick up as the aftershock of Storm Dexter takes hold

“Another comes closer towards the UK as we go through Saturday and into Sunday, and while much of the country stays with the fine weather as we go through the weekend, towards the north and the northwest it will be a bit cloudier, a bit wetter and a bit windier.”
Storms could then give way to a blast of summer heat with temperatures after the weekend set to surge.

Parts of the country could hit the high 20Cs or even 30C next week amid hints of a late heatwave.

Jim Dale, meteorologist for British Weather Services and social commentator, said: “There is every chance that as we go towards the middle of August, we will see another heatwave, with temperatures back up to 30C.

“This will follow stuff coming out of the Atlantic, bringing the risk of further stormy weather.

“It is the north of the country that will get the worst of any unsettled weather, and which will also miss the very high temperatures.”
