The iconic designer counted Princess Charlene's wedding dress as one of his many contributions to the fashion world

Princess Charlene of Monaco has issued a heartfelt statement following the death of legendary fashion designer Giorgio Armani.

The Monegasque royal paid tribute to the Italian who died "surrounded by his loved ones" at age 91 on Thursday.


The Armani Group announced the news "with infinite sorrow" on Thursday, paying tribute to its "creator, founder and tireless driving force".

Following the announcement, Princess Charlene issued her own statement to the designer who had created her wedding dress.

"It is with great sadness that the Prince and I have learnt of the death of Giorgio Armani," Charlene began.

"He was an emblematic figure in the fashion world and has created and shaped trends that have influenced generations.

"Amongst the variety of his works, was also my wedding dress in July 2011.

"His work and achievements will survive him and continue to be present in the future," Charlene continued.

"H.S.H. Princess Charlene," she signed off.

Alongside the tribute, shared on social media, was a black and white image of Charlene’s wedding day.

It showed her in her dress, created by the designer, flanked by Armani himself and the groom, Prince Albert of Monaco.

The Princess’s statement was also shared in French, the national language of the principality.

Announcing their co-founder's death, Armani Group issued a statement on Thursday which read: "With infinite sorrow, the Armani group announces the passing of its creator, founder and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani."

"Indefatigable to the end, he worked until his final days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections, and the many ongoing and future projects.

"Over the years, Giorgio Armani has crafted a vision that expanded from fashion to every aspect of life, anticipating the times with extraordinary clarity and pragmatism.

"He has been driven by relentless curiosity and a deep attention to the present and to people," they said.

The legendary fashion designer had been unwell for some time and was forced to drop out of his group's shows at Milan's Men's Fashion Week in June.

It was the first time in his career that he had missed one of his catwalk events.

Mr Armani's cause of death was not revealed.

A funeral chamber will be established this weekend in Milan with a private funeral to follow, the company said.
