Gary Lineker calls for football rule change as BBC presenter reveals he 'got a lot of stick'

Gary Lineker believes extra-time should be scrapped in the Champions League - and admitted he 'got a lot of stick' for campaigning against the away goals rule.

There were four blockbuster matches in Europe's top-tier club competition this week, with fans treated to several classics.

Arsenal drew 2-2 with Bayern Munich at home, while Real Madrid and Manchester City played out a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Bernabeu.

Barcelona edged a 3-2 thriller with Paris Saint-Germain, while Atletico Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund 2-1 at the Metropolitano Stadium.

In recent years, football has changed some of the rules when it comes to the Champions League.

The away goals rule was scrapped in 2021, something Lineker was happy with.

But the BBC presenter feels extra-time should now be abolished, too.

"I campaigned for years to get rid of the away goals rule," he told The Rest is Football podcast.

"And when it came to fruition a couple of years ago I got a lot of stick from people because I was kind of saying 'this is good for the game'.

"The only other thing to get rid of now and this again is purely because of fairness, I think you shouldn't have extra-time if the scores are level after two games.

"I think you should go to penalties.

"At the moment that gives the home side in the second leg an extra half-hour at home which is an advantage and no team should have an advantage certainly in the quarter-final stages of the Champions League.

"The last-16 because they earn that place playing the second game at home because of where you finish in the group but in the quarters that's not the case.

"For example if Arsenal go to the Allianz next week and draw then it goes to extra time and Bayern Munich get an extra half-hour at home.

"Doesn't seem fair to me."

Alan Shearer, also appearing on the podcast, agreed with Lineker's assessment.

"I think it's time to get rid of it with the exception possibly of a final," he said.

"Even then I wouldn't because once it gets to extra time, everyone just wants it to go to penalties anyway don't they?

"Everyone loves watching a penalty shootout."

With two English teams left in the competition, it'll be intriguing to see how things play out.

Arsenal did well against Bayern at home but facing the German giants in their own back yard will be a daunting task.

The Gunners lost 5-1 on their last trip to the Allianz Arena back in 2017 on a chastening night for the north London side.

Given their impressive performances this term, however, it's hard to see a repeat happening.

As for City, they cruised to a 4-0 victory over Real Madrid at the Etihad Stadium last term.

But it would be wrong to write off Los Blancos, especially given the sublime form of Jude Bellingham this term.
