Ministers are setting out policies under the title Operation Red Meat, designed to revive Boris Johnson’s fortunes after continuing anger over 'partygate' allegations.

Jonathan Ashworth has told GB News there are "serious questions now about whether Boris Johnson has lied to the British people" in an exclusive interview.

The Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions was questioned by Eamonn Holmes and Isabel Webster on the difference between a resurfaced image of Labour leader Keir Starmer drinking during lockdown, and the Downing Street parties.

Ashworth said: "Keir Starmer has been crystal clear, it was a takeaway when he was having work meetings.

"The difference is we’re talking about 15 parties that we know of that took place in Downing Street, including a party on the 20th of May when Boris Johnson told us in Parliament that he knew nothing about it.

"Overnight we’ve heard that Dominic Cummings, his former right-hand-man is saying he specifically warned Boris Johnson about it and Boris Johnson was warned about it."

He shared his doubts over the future of the Prime Minister's future, telling GB News: "Serious questions now about whether Boris Johnson has lied to the British people.

"The question to Conservative MPs is why are they putting up with this?

"I’ll tell you why they’re putting up with this, they’re weighing up what they think is in their electoral interest, whether they should think with this guy or get rid of him because of how that will impact on the next election.

"They should be making a decision on what is in the national interest.

"Winston Churchill said 'country comes first not political party', Tory MPs should have that in their mind today."

An exclusive GB News poll has found two thirds (67%) of participants believe the Prime Minister has not told the truth about parties in Downing Street.

It comes as Ministers are setting out a flurry of policies, under the title Operation Red Meat, which are designed to revive Boris Johnson’s fortunes as he faces continuing anger over “partygate” allegations.

These include a threat to scrap the BBC licence fee, ending coronavirus restrictions and tougher action against Channel crossings

But whether all this will succeed in appeasing anger is another matter, with former minister Tim Loughton suggesting policy changes or sackings cannot “put things right”.

“In this case all roads lead back to Downing Street and the person whose name is on the front door,” the MP said as he set out why he thinks Mr Johnson must resign.
